Piano and guitar lessons for children

Every child is different, so I tailor each lesson to their needs, abilities and personality. My aim is to grow their musical taste, their ear and, most of all, their creativity, which they’ll use whether or not they grow up to be musicians.

The course

1. Music games. We start with games designed for children, so they get comfortable while their ear and sense of music grow.
2. Rhythm. We use simple percussion instruments to take the first steps into playing.
3. Technique. We work on their favourite instrument, piano or guitar.
4. Songs. They learn songs they love, from their favourite films and artists to classics, so practising feels fun and they have something to play for family and friends.
5. Theory. Reading music, understanding how songs are built and developing their ear, so they understand what they play, can learn new music on their own, and can start writing their own songs.

How long lessons are

As a rough guide: 30 minutes at ages 4–5, 40 minutes at 6–7 and 50 minutes at 8–12. I’m happy to talk about what suits your child.

Brothers and sisters

Siblings can have their lessons back to back in one visit, and they can play duets and jam together. Families with two or more children get priority on the waiting list.

Children who need a different approach

I have experience teaching neurodivergent children, and children who are anxious or didn’t click with a previous teacher. I adapt the pace and approach until they feel comfortable and confident. You never need to share a diagnosis. Just tell me what helps.

Exams, if they want them

I prepare children for ABRSM, RSL and Trinity exams at any grade. All three boards also offer exams you can take by video, which some children find less daunting.

Before I go, we can record a short practice video on your phone, so your child knows exactly what to work on.
